Tunisian in the Round
Description: Learning how to do Tunisian crochet in the round opens up a whole new world of fun projects and colorwork. Tunisian in the round uses a double ended hook and 2 strands of yarn. For this class we will start out creating a simple coffee cup cozy. This small project will teach us how to work in the round without any shaping. After we are comfortable with the mechanics of Tunisian crochet in-the-round, we'll start on the hat where we'll learn how to do a magic ring foundation row along with in-the-round shaping. We'll finish the crown in class and you can finish the remainder of the hat at home.
Materials:
2 skeins of DK or Worsted weight yarn in two contrasting colors
either a 6mm (J) double ended hook or two interchangeable hooks with cable.
8 removable stitch markers. -
The Architecture of Texture
Let us go past the basics and look at how Tunisian crochet is actually built. We are going to explore three sophisticated textures that show just how much this craft can do. Learn the airy Arrowhead Stitch, the rich diamond-patterned Smock Stitch, and the dimensional Tunisian Front Post Stitch. Our goal is to understand stitch anatomy by learning exactly where the hook needs to go and why things like yarn-overs and anchoring to posts change the fabric so much. You will walk away with a stitch study that works as a gauge swatch and a reference for a future Shawl Sampler project I am designing just for this weekend.
Prerequisites: Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS) and Tunisian Knit Stitch (TKS). Yarn Overs (YO) and the Standard Return Pass. Tunisian Simple Stitch Two Together (TSS2Tog).
Materials:
100g of DK weight yarn in a light, solid color (avoid dark or variegated yarns so you can clearly see your stitch anatomy!).
5.5mm or 6.0mm Tunisian crochet hook with a cable and stopper. -
Tunisian Crochet: Lace and Cables
Prerequisites: Prior knowledge of the basic stitches, forward pass, return pass and bind off. Comfortable creating Tunisian crochet fabric.
In this class, you will learn:
How to use the basics in Tunisian crochet to work various stitches into lace and cables. We will create lace using strategically placed stitches on the FwP and the ReTP. We will create cables alone and apply after.Materials: Any smooth DK weight yarn. Two 6mm or 6.5 mm crochet hooks without a cushion handle.
HW: Create two swatches.
1. 16 tks x 16 rows, bind off.
2. 4 rows of 16 sts: tps 1, tks 12, tps1, work the last st. -
Tunisian Crochet Colorwork
Description: Explore the creative possibilities of Tunisian crochet colorwork in this technique-focused class. We’ll begin with the fundamentals of changing colors to create smooth fades, bold stripes, and clean color blocks. From there, you’ll learn the Tunisian mosaic stitch and how it opens the door to striking graphic designs.Throughout class, you’ll create a series of swatches that allow you to practice and combine these techniques while gaining a deeper understanding of what makes Tunisian crochet colorwork unique and so much fun.
Materials: 2 colors of DK or Worsted weight yarn (50g per color, use two highly contrasting colors).
6.5mm hook and 8mm hook that can hold at least 14 stitches. -
Drape Deconstructed
Tunisian crochet has a bit of a reputation for being stiff with little drape. But it doesn’t have to be! In this masterclass, we’re going to pull back the curtain on why some projects feel like rugs while others have that liquid-soft drape we all crave.
This isn't just about Tunisian hooks, either. The rules of fiber we’ll talk about apply to knitting and regular crochet, too. We’re going to dive into my personal library of swatches - everything from bouncy wool and fluffy Suri to liquid-soft silk - so you can see and feel exactly how different yarns, hook sizes, and stitches play together. This session is the perfect primer for the afternoon Yarn Tasting giving you the tools to evaluate any yarn like a pro.
Prerequisites: Open to all skill levels! This is a relaxed, demonstration-style class designed for anyone who wants to make garments that fit and feel amazing.
Materials:
Just your curiosity and a notebook! -
No More Squares: Shaping in Tunisian Crochet
Pre-requisites: Prior knowledge of the basic stitches, forward pass, return pass and bind off.
In this class, you will learn:
How to use increases and decreases to make shapes beyond squares. Techniques learned can be used to create different shawl shapes, necklines and armholes.Materials: Any DK weight yarn and a 6mm crochet hook without a cushion handle. A corded 6mm Tunisian Crochet hook is the best option but not necessary.
Yarn Tasting Experience
One of the highlights of the weekend will be our guided yarn tasting with Minnesota indie dyer Sunshine Queen Fiber Arts.
Participants will explore multiple yarn bases through swatching while learning how fiber content, construction, and twist influence fabric and garment performance.
